Embedded COTS technology is used in a number of computer systems across a broad range of military and government applications. COTS technology frequently appears in cluster computing systems that utilize a passive backplane and a number of standard off-the-shelf single board computers and system host boards. Cluster computing systems maximize the number of processing cores in a rugged 19 inch rackmount enclosure to facilitate the processing of large and complex data such as the data used in cryptography analysis. COTS boards are also common in applications such as ordinance firing systems, missile tracking, homeland security threat analysis and satellite communications.
