What is PCI Express (PCIe)?

As computer components continually improve, Trenton Technology continues to provide customers with cutting-edge innovation, enhanced hard-drive capacity and upgraded processor speeds. Compatible with most existing computer systems, PCI Express (PCIe) architecture supplies enhanced bandwidth and improved graphics performance. Many of Trenton’s system host boards (SHBs) and single board computers (SBCs) support PCIe bus communication, improving both the speed and functionality of your existing system.

The official name for the PCI Express interface is “Peripheral Component Interconnect Express” and is often abbreviated as PCIe. PCIe is a high-speed and scalable serial communication interface between single board computers and the system's option cards or between individual components on an SBC. Scalability is achieved in a PCI Express interface by enabling individual PCIe lanes to be combined to provide additional bandwidth and faster data communication speeds. Using one PCIe lane or combining 4, 8 or 16 PCIe lanes creates PCI Express interface links of x1, x4, x8 and x16 respectively. The effective interface speed of a x4 PCIe, Gen 1 link is roughly equivalent of the fastest parallel bus interface: 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X.

At Trenton, we realize that your company needs a computer system that is as adaptable as it is reliable. That’s why we recommend products like our BPG6544 backplane. The backplane supports PCI card technology, along with ISA, PCI X and PCI Express option cards—an example of how our cutting-edge architecture can interface with current component options and their legacy cards.

Industry Excellence from the PCIe Experts

A leader in the embedded computing space, Trenton operates two United States facilities. Our board-level manufacturing facility is located in Utica, NY, while our Gainesville, GA location houses our custom engineering team. Both locations are responsible for producing industry-leading computer systems and hardware components, and both are integral in realizing Trenton’s passion for quality and innovation.
