    Specification

    bpg6741

    2U GRAPHICS-CLASS PCI EXPRESS™ BACKPLANE
Trenton's BPG6741 is a graphics-class backplane with three PCI Express™ option card slots. The butterfly form factor of the BPG6741 is designed for use in a 2U chassis.

    SHB SLOT
Accepts an SHB Express™ (PICMG® 1.3) compliant (graphics class) processor such as a Trenton T4L, TML or MCG-series system host board.

    PCI EXPRESS SERIAL SLOTS
PCIe1 and PCIe3 option card slots are located on side B of the butterfly backplane. Side B is opposite the SHB and the side B slots are driven by x1 PCI express links. The Trenton SHBs support the auto-negotiation and link traning features of PCI Express that enables PCIe1 and PCIe3 option cardslots to support x8, x4 and x1 PCI Express cards. PCIe4 is a x16 mechanical slot located on side A of the backplane or the SHB side of the backplane. PCIe4 is driven with a x16 PCI Express link from a graphics-class SHB and is capable of supporting high-end PCI Express video and graphic cards.

Mechanical interferences may exist between the SHB's cooling solution and certain types of option card heat sinks used on a x16 PCI Express option card installed in backplane slot PCIe4. To ensure proper mechanical clearances regardless of option card heat sink type, Trenton recommends using either half-length or quarter-length x16 PCI Express option cards in backplane slot PCIe4. The MECHANICAL CLEARANCE CHART provides additional information.

    POWER CONNECTORS
The BPG6741 backplane is available with low-profile right-angle power connectors suitable for use with either an ATX or EPS power supply.

    AUXILIARY POWER CONNECTOR
The +12V power connectors on the BPG6741 route auxiliary power to the SHB's edge connectors. This new capability of PICMG 1.3 compliant SHBs and backplanes eliminates the need for auxiliary power connections on the system host board.

    POWER INDICATORS
Surface-mount LEDs provide a convenient visual check for +5V, -5V, +5V AUX, +12V, -12V and +3.3V power connection and status. CAUTION: Never install or remove the SHB or any option card from the BPG6741 backplane if the +5V AUX LED is GREEN. If the system appears to be off and the +5V AUX LED is GREEN, you need to remove or turn-off the incoming power to the system power supply.

    PRINTED CIRCUIT LAYERS
The backplane is a six-layer, .062" thick board with three separate signal layers: +5V/+12V, +3.3V and ground. Multi-layer backplane construction provides excellent noise immunity.

    USB AUDIO CONTROLLER
The audio controller on the BPG6741 backplane eliminates the need to dedicate an option card slot to a sound card. The USB audio controller supports a variety of speaker, headset and microphone configurations. The high-performance stereo audio ADC/DAC, general purpose I/O connections and codec functionality are key features of the BPG6741's audio controller.

The USB4 port from the Trenton MCG-series SHB provides the input for the USB audio controller and the USB4 input becomes Audio0 on the BPG6741 backplane. If a Trenton T4L or TML SHB is used, then the SHBs must be factory-equipped with the optional USB routing to the backplane. Likewise non-Trenton SHBs must provide the optional USB I/O backplane routing defined in the PICMG 1.3 specification in order to enable the audio functionality of the Trenton BPG6741 backplane.

    OPTIONAL USB 2.0 INTERFACES
Trenton's BPG6741 provides one USB 2.0 header capable of supporting two general purpose USB 2.0 backplane interface ports.

    OPTIONAL ETHERNET INTERFACE
Trenton's BPG6741 backplane supports the optional Ethernet routing feature of the SHB Express (PICMG 1.3) specification. One 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet RJ-45 connector is available for use on the Ethernet version of the backplane. The Ethernet port is located on Side B of the backplane. This required connector location may necessitate a mechanical modification to the chassis in order to facilitate proper backplane mounting within the enclosure. The SHB OPTIONAL BACKPLANE I/O SUPPORT TABLE explains the backplane I/O capabilities supported by Trenton's PICMG 1.3 System Host Boards.

    CONNECTING POWER
A new approach is required to connect system power due to the combination of new power supply technologies and the soft-power control signals available via the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). ACPI signals are now supported by PICMG 1.3 SHBs and backplanes. Auxiliary power connectors located on the PICMG 1.4 backplanes now deliver all of the power directly to the edge connectors of the SHB.

Auxiliary power connectors on the backplane are provided to help improve system Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). All power can be delivered to the SHB via the board's edge connectors. Trenton's PICMG 1.3 SHBs and backplane SHB edge connector slots have ample power pins available to meet the power demands of high-performance dual processor SHBs. The ATX/EPS and +12V power connectors on the BPG6741 backplane also have an ample number of power pins available to meet these demands. The system designer needs to be aware of the potential power demands of the entire system including the particular SHB to ensure that both the power supply and the power connectors in the cable harness can safely deliver the necessary power to drive the entire system.

Specific implementations of ACPI signals, ATX/EPS power supply type and the operating system software will determine the specific connection method for the power supply. For example the use of the Power Good (PWRGD), Power Supply On (PSON#), Five Volt Standby (5VSB) and the Power Button (PWRBT#) ACPI or soft power control signals require the following connection method:

ACPI signal usage is optional and may be turned off using the SHBs BIOS and/or signal jumpers. Specific power connections and BIOS parameters will differ depending on unique system design requirements. Refer to the Appendix B (Power Connection) and Advanced Setup BIOS sections found in the Technical Reference Manual for your specific Trenton system host board for more information.
